Eigentlich ist es erstaunlich, dass Annie Proulxs “Schiffmeldungen” 1995 wochenlang die “Lies-wichtig-Listen” des Spiegels oder anderen Orts anführte, denn das Buch ist stinklangweilig. Proulxs lakonischer, rauher Stil beraubt die wenigen einschneidenden Ereignissen der Handlung jeder Dramatik. Dadurch gelingt die Focusierung auf die innere Entwicklung ihres Romanheldens, aber Quoyle ist nicht gerade eine schillernde Persönlichkeit.
Was das Buch allerdings unwiderstehlich macht, ist, dass diese rauhe Erzähllandschaft nicht nur Neufundland als Ort des Geschehens fast sinnlich spürbar macht. Proulx schafft auf 350 Seiten einen Hintergrund, auf dem sie Sätze platzieren kann, die in ihrer Reinheit wie Sonnenstrahlen durch eine Wolkendecke brechen.

“Es ist Zeit, dass ich zur Guckinsel rausfahre und das Grab von meinem armen alten Vater herrichte. Hab’s letztes Jahr aufgeschoben und das Jahr davor auch.” Eine gewisse Trauer lastete auf den Worten. Billy wirkte wie in einem Briefumschlag verwahrt; manchmal ging die Klappe auf, sein plattgedrücktes Selbst rutschte auf den Tisch.
